Artist Books & Editions

Book of Changes series- 1991

I created handmade books based on Asian sutra formats as a Workspace Artist at Dieu Donné Papermill (New York, 1991) . I photosilkscreened lung tissue imaged by Scanning Electron microscopy onto rice paper.

Each image is juxtaposed with its form, digitally abstracted and painted with gouache on rice paper. The two renderings were embedded side-by-side into handmade paper.

Kama Sutra Series - Khoj Workshop, Modiginar, India, 1998

In 1998, I created a series of palm leaf books from palm trees on the property of the Khoj International Workshop in Modinigar, India. Each artist was asked to respond to the environment and use something from the surrounding area.
I wanted to work with the traditional Asian palm leaf book - a format I had studied and used in making books as an artist-in-residence with Dieu Donne Papermill in New York.

Traditional palm leaf books incorporate images with text. In Delhi I found various publications of the Kama Sutra along with the Starr Report and American relationship self-help books.

When I arrived at the Khoj residency, I found palm trees from which I gathered and cured leaves for the books. I cut and pasted images of the Kama Sutra with text from the Starr Report and the self help books. The narrative reflected my recent experience of divorce along with legal language about sexual relationships prompted by Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky.

Joss Series 1995-1998

I printed Scanning Electron images of cells onto Joss paper. These images were manipulated, extracting the edge of each form into digital line.

I was inspired by sights I’d seen in Singapore where the past & present collided in the late ‘80’s.

Parts of this series was exhibited at Nature Morte New Delhi in 1998.
