1990’s

Specimens- 1990-96

I manipulated extreme closeups of cells from Scanning Electron photographs to extract underlying structures and form. The digitized structures are then enlarged into monumental abstractions on rice paper. Subject matter included the human body (lung tissue, bone fragments, viruses and cancer cells) and the botanical (plants, dust, pollen and mold).

Still Lifes - late ‘90’s

The Still-Life paintings depict magnified forms of diatoms revealed through digital processing. The intensity of color I saw in India for a show at Nature Morte led to vibrant grounds of pigments and dyes. I painted linear forms with glossy oil enamel paint contrasting with matte surfaces creating an optic tension between figure and ground.
